ABOUT THE VOLT METER:

Ammeters display the flow of current, either into or out of the battery. If you have a lot of current being pulled from the battery and the alternator is at maximum output, the flow is equalized and the ammeter needle read at "zero". In other words, the gauge is telling you nothing. However the addition of a volt gauge in conjunction with the ammeter tells you everything. For instance...

13.2 v = Normal charge rate
13.8 v = Charge rate with load
14.4 v = Rate w/drained batt
14.7 v = Overcharge / drained
anything other than the above indicates a charging problem
